Monday.COME "Taiwan’s Democratization and Localization – A Reference for Hong Kong"
In 1982 when Deng Xiaoping officially formulated the "great idea" of the "One Country, Two Systems" , he had intended it for the peaceful reunification of Taiwan. To use this political principle in handling Hong Kong's and Macau's future is to set an example.
In the fifteen years under the "One Country, Two Systems", what kind of example have the people of Hong Kong seen? On the other side of the shore, Taiwan has in the past twenty some years begun from direct election of the president to party alternation to the constant growth of civil society. What has this in turn demonstrated for us?
Monday.COME is delighted to have one of Taiwan's important public intellectuals Chang Tieh Chih (張鐵志)talk to us about Taiwan's democratization and localization. This not only is the key to understanding Taiwan, but it also can be a reference to Hong Kong.
