Off the record "From JLM to a Career in the International News Media"
Have you ever wondered what it is like to work for an international news organization and reporting in English? What it is like working for a wire agency? What are the perspectives needed to report local news to an international audience? Do you think it is impossible for a Cantonese-speaking local student to rise through the ranks in the English language media?
Well, think again. JLM alumnus Aries Poon has walked a long journey from Varsity to being the Taipei Bureau Chief for the Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones Newswires. Since 2010 Aries has overseen a team of four reporters covering technology, finance, politics and culture.
Aries started his career as a reporter for the RTHK in 2000. After a brief six months, he moved to the Cable TV as a financial reporter and presenter. In 2003, he joined the Reuters' Chinese language service in Hong Kong, covering the city's vibrant property market. He was a financial reporter for the English news service of Dow Jones Newswires since 2005, and became the Hong Kong Deputy Bureau Chief in 2009.
